Der Deerhound in der Literatur und in Artikeln
Hunde-Enzyklopädien sind aus der Mode gekommen. Die letzte wirklich umfassende im deutschen Sprachraum ist diejenige von Hans Räber: «Enzyklopädie der Rassehunde», erschienen 2001, Umfang 912 Seiten, Gewicht 6.72 kg, nur noch antiquarisch erhältlich ab ca. 159 Euro, oder dann als E-Book.
Heute informiert man sich am häufigsten online. Dabei ist in der Regel kaum mehr herauszufinden, von wem die Angaben und Aussagen stammen.
Anders sieht es aus, wenn wir in der Zeit etwas zurückgehen: Zwischen ca. 1840 und 1930 wurden besonders in Grossbritannien hervorragende, umfassende Enzyklopädien veröffentlicht, häufig von weit gereisten Kynologen, die viele Rassen selbst gesehen hatten. Spannend sind nicht nur die Kapitel über Hunderassen, sondern auch über Haltung, Krankheiten und deren Behandlung. Im deutschen Sprachraum war “Geschichte und Beschreibung der Rassen des Hundes“ von Ludwig Beckmann, erschien 1894, wegweisend sowie das in 4 Sprachen erschienene monumentale Werk von Henri Comte de Bylandt: “Hunderassen – Ihre Beschreibung, Points, Typus, Eigenschaften und Fehler“, 1897 – 1904 (2 Bände; Holländisch, Englisch, Französisch und Deutsch).
Der Deerhound gehört zu den Hunderassen, die sich glücklicherweise in den letzten 2 Jahrhunderten vom Typ her nicht wesentlich verändert haben (abgesehen von der Grösse). Dies soll auch so bleiben. Deshalb ist es ganz wichtig, diese alten Beschreibungen sowie Darstellungen auf Gemälden, Zeichnungen und Stichen immer wieder zu konsultieren und verinnerlichen.
Neben den Kapiteln in den Enzyklopädien gibt es aber auch Bücher aus dem 19. Jahrhundert über Deerhounds resp. die Hirschjagd in Schottland, die eine wahre Fundgrube und Augenweide sind. Deerhounds tauchen auch in Reiseberichten auf.
Heidi Gröbli hat sich verdankenswerterweise die Mühe gemacht, Texte aus ihrem grossen Schatz an Literatur ins Deutsche zu übersetzen und sie im Bulletin des Deerhound-Club der Schweiz zu publizieren. Nun stellen wir diese Texte online und machen sie damit einem noch grösseren Publikum zugänglich.

Von allen aufgeführten Titeln besitzen Heidi Gröbli oder Renée Devaux/Kurt Rohrbach ein Exemplar, entweder ein Original, ein Nachdruck oder zumindest eine Fotokopie. Viele alte Bücher wurden in den letzten Jahren digitalisiert und ins Netz gestellt, nachgedruckt (oft in ziemlich schlechter Qualität, aber immerhin) oder sind als Faksimile-Druck erschienen, so dass sie nicht antiquarisch aufgespürt werden müssen.
